Head Teacher's Welcome

Welcome to our new school website. We are a large multicultural Junior School near the centre of Huddersfield.  At Birkby Junior School we work hard to provide a creative, enjoyable and rewarding learning experience for each child in an inclusive, secure and stimulating learning environment.

We are proud of our school community and celebrate the rich and diverse backgrounds of all our pupils.

The Staff and the Governing Body at Birkby Junior School are committed to working together to give children the academic and life skills they will need to be successful.

We care about our Parents and Carers, we welcome your involvement and we look for your support in ensuring good attendance, good behaviour and hard work from your children. We operate an open-door policy and welcome you into the school anytime you would like to talk.  Hopefully you can find all the information you need on our website but if you can’t please feel free to call into school. We will be happy to help you and answer any further questions you may have.

Thank you

Mrs Susan Davis

Cultural Diversity Day - Tuesday 21st May 2024
Dear Parent/Carer On Tuesday 21st May 2024, we will be celebrating Cultural Diversity Day. This worldwide event is an opportunity to help our pupils to learn more about different cultures, traditions and customs from around the world and to understand the value of cultural diversity. To help us celebrate our diverse community, it would be lovely to see children attend school in traditional clothes or in colours from a flag which represents their culture and heritage. We will be learning about different cultures from a range of countries and each year group will have their own focus for the day. Year 3 will be exploring traditional sports and dance; Year 4 – traditional clothing and languages; Year 5 - traditional children’s stories and games; Year 6 - traditional music and art. Some activities may include making or tasting traditional foods. Mrs Anderson & Mrs Bowen. Geography TLR / PSHE TLR

Dear parents and carers, For some time, the Governing Body of Birkby Junior School has been carefully considering the school’s future in a fast-changing and increasingly challenging educational landscape. After lots of consideration and research, we have decided that the best option is to explore extending our partnerships and founding a new Multi Academy Trust with 3 other local schools. Please find attached a letter inviting you to a consultation meeting on 24th April, at either 9.00am or 5.00pm. I have also attached some frequently asked questions which you may find useful. Kind regards, Mrs S Davis Headteacher

    Ramadan
Dear Parent/Carer RAMADAN As a school, we wish to ensure that during Ramadan we do all that we can to support our Muslim pupils to fulfil their commitment to fasting. At the same time, we want them to be able to continue their education with as little difficulty as possible. We know that some of our older children may be fasting. I have outlined below some things which school and home can do to help. As a school we will: • carefully consider the content of lessons, so that pupils can continue to take part without undue distress, e.g. less energetic work in PE rather than stamina and training; • praise pupils’ achievements and commitment; • help our non-Muslim pupils to understand how to behave around those who are fasting; • encourage pupils to remember the behavioural aspects of the observance of Ramadan. Parents The following will be helpful: • please let your child’s teacher know your wishes with regard to fasting: should your child break his/her fast if he/she feels weak or unwell? • if your children are fasting on some days only, please consider choosing weekends or the Easter holidays, and try to avoid days which will cause disruption to school work e.g. Year 6 SATs preparation, PE days, swimming etc. Fasting at Lunchtimes We encourage parents to allow their children to spend lunchtime at home. This allows them to rest and avoid energetic and physical activities. I hope that together we can help our pupils to approach Ramadan in a positive and responsible way. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss this further. Yours sincerely S. Davis Mrs S Davis Head Teacher

Dear Parents/Carers, In 2024, Red Nose Day will be returning on Friday the 15th of March.
