Science

We are keen and inquisitive scientists at Birkby Junior School!

Within each year group, Science learning covers Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as skills that require them to ‘Think Scientifically’. Pupils are taught the essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of Science. This way, they are then able to become more able scientists who can relate their learning to the world around them and implications of Science, today and for the future.

Mastery in Science

At Birkby Junior School, we are focusing on supporting children’s mastery of scientific concepts. There are a range of strategies put in place to support this within Science lessons:

  • Children apply their scientific learning in their writing.
  • Children are encouraged to answer a range of question types, to promote the reasoning of their understanding.
  • Children are encouraged to ask in-depth, high level thinking, questions to support an inquisitive mind.
  • Children apply their understanding of a scientific concept in a real life scenario by answering ‘Testbase’ questions.

Schemes and assessment

Teachers use the Rising Stars scheme to help them to plan Science lessons and use the mini progress tests at the beginning and end of every unit to assess the progress in children’s understanding in that unit of Science.
