Welcome back Year 6! And what an exciting Summer Term we have in prospect.
Not long now till the SATs begin and you can show just how much you have learnt. During the lead up to SATS, we will continue to work hard in preparation with additional booster sessions each week. We are very proud of all our Year 6s and know that you will all be brilliant!
Important as they are, however, the Summer Term is not all about SATs. We also have lots of exciting learning going on right up until you leave us and go on to High School. In Geography, we will be moving onto learning about renewal energy. This learning is brilliant as a stimulus for a range of extended pieces of writing, which is a big focus this term as our Writing Assessments are submitted at the end of June. We will also have our annual Art Week in the latter part of the term, where we will be creating our own portraits; our fabulous Music Day, where we will be playing a variety of instruments and learning how to write musical notation; and our multimedia project, which will bring together coding skills and creativity.
English, Maths and Science will initially focus on SATs preparation but will then move towards preparation for High School. In English, we will be reading ‘The Suitcase Kid’ by Jacqueline Wilson as well as studying some amazing short animations to generate writing opportunities. In Maths, we will be consolidating all of our learning as well as working on our Y6/7 Transition Unit which is brilliant to prepare for High School as it includes some very complex mathematics and a lot of KS3 content. In Science, we will be studying the life cycles of different animals before taking on a range of exciting investigations and developing our ability to work scientifically. It is all great fun!
As well as all of this fun in the classroom, we have our residential trip to Bradley Woods coming up in very soon, where we will be zip wiring, crate stacking, firing arrows in archery and much much more!!
We also hope to be enjoying the fresh air as much as possible and will be taking every opportunity to indulge in outdoor learning. We are also planning a very exciting Leavers’ experience for our Year 6s this year, so look out for further information, which we will send as soon as possible.
A wonderful term in prospect which will go by in a flash.
Please remember…
What will I need to bring to school?
Please ensure you bring your study books to school every day, as these will help you with your learning in the run up to SATs. Please also bring your planner. Your teacher will check your planner regularly and an adult at home will need to do so too. Your study books will be used in class and you will be expected to use them at home too!
You will be informed by your class teacher when you have PE lessons and we will be continuing with the routine of children arriving for school in their PE kits on their allocated days. Make sure you have suitable footwear for PE, as we will be going outdoors for PE as much as possible.
What work will I need to do at home?
Read and complete activities in your study books regularly!
You will also receive homework every week (approximately 30 minutes per evening) in line with government guidance and you will be expected to complete it on time. There will usually be a piece of English, Maths and Science homework, but sometimes there may be homework linked to another subject to support another area of your studies. If you struggle with your homework please do come and ask for help; we will be only too happy to do so!
Spellings will also be learnt but this may not always be in the form of a weekly test. We follow current research and use a variety of effective and creative ways to help children learn their spellings.
In addition to this, it is important that you continue to read and discuss texts with someone at home on a regular basis. You will be able to visit the school library once a week, in order to select a new reading book. Try and read every day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. It doesn’t have to be the school library book – it could be a magazine you have read, game instructions, a recipe or any other texts you have been reading.
