We know that, from time to time, some of our families who need extra support at difficult times. Alongside a monthly food bank held here at school, there are a number of other food banks and other support available in and around Huddersfield.

Please speak to a member of staff if you need any help or support, we are always happy to help.

Birkby Junior School Food Bank

Our Food Bank in school has been running since November 2022. It is open every month for our families in need. Dried and canned food is available most of the time and we also occasionally get some fresh vegetables and toiletries as well as other items.

We are extremely grateful to those members of our community who donate items to our Food Bank every month, without whom none of this would have been possible.

If you are a local business who would like to support us to continue to provide much needed essentials to families in need please get in touch with our school office by telephone: 01484 223975

or via the school email:

office@birkbyjuniorschool.co.uk. Thank you.

The Bread and Butter Thing

The-Bread-and-Butter-Thing-1024x223

The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) works in partnership with supermarkets, factories and farms to redistribute surplus food.

This is food that often goes to waste because it’s wrongly labelled or there is simply too much of it. Reducing their waste helps to reduce their environmental effects whilst supporting local communities.

Each week members access three bags of produce including fresh fruit and veg, chilled goods, as well as cupboard staples such as pasta and cereal. Families can use their NHS healthy start vouchers and, in support of period poverty, low-cost period products will also be available.

Members of The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) can get shopping bags filled with a minimum of £35-worth of quality nutritious food for just £7.50.

Joining the Bread and Butter Thing is simple, there is no joining criteria. Anyone who would like to become a member to access the affordable food service can send an email or text to hello@breadandbutterthing.org or text 07860 063304
. Alternatively, there is an application form and more information at
www.breadandbutterthing.org/contact

Our nearest Bread and Butter project is held at the Chestnut Centre, every Friday 1.30-2.00pm.
